Greater Cincinnati Calligrapher’s Guild Paste Paper Day

Greater Cincinnati Calligrapher’s Guild
Paste Paper – Saturday, November 5, 2011
Art Academy of Cincinnati
1212 Jackson Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202
10:00am – 3:00 pm (bring your lunch))
Please RSVP your attendance to Jo Diamantes no later than October 31 (jodiamantes@cinci.rr.com) as we need to turn in a list of attendees for use by the AAC security office. There will be a small charge of $5.00 for this event – payable that day.

Pay surface parking lot is available across the street from the AAC.  Street parking is also available (remember to feed the meters). Allow sufficient time (about 15 minutes) to park and sign-in at the security desk.

In its simplest form we wet a sheet of paper, color it with colored paste(s) (paste and acrylic paint in our case) make marks/patterns/designs on it and let it dry. . Wear old clothes and be prepared to play and experiment. Paste paper has been referred to as an adult version of finger painting but with VERY cool and sophisticated results.

Supplies needed (Ross Art Paste will be provided)
• Papers to turn into paste paper (we’ll have some Arches Text wove available for you at cost). Paper must be able to withstand wetting, application of paste mixture, drawing various tools across it without tearing and moving it to a drying location.  In addition to Arches Text wove other suggested papers are Canson Mi-Teintes, Strathmore and Mohawk Superfine papers. Black papers also turn out looking very elegant especially with a touch of gold or silver.
• Containers for water (large and small if possible) and small containers (butter tubs for example) with lids for mixing paint and paste for use and for storing leftover paste mixtures.
• Sponges and/or brushes for wetting paper and applying paste
• Newspapers/blotters to lay paper on to dry out
• “Tools” to create designs – toothbrushes, cut up plastic cards, brushes, stencils, sponges, craft sticks, other calligraphic tools you might want to use
• Paper towels
• Trash bag (large) to work on so we don’t stain surfaces and tape to hold it down
• Bring your own lunch and drinks – and/or something to share if you’d like.

Supplies if you have them (and only if you have them – this is a fun day not an expensive day!) and we have supplies to share.
• Acrylic paints. Golden brand acrylics are preferred by many but most any acrylic paint seems to work.
• Matte medium (needed if using non-permanent coloring agents)
• Other inclusions like mica powder (pearlex pigments)
• Pastel chalk (looks really nice on the paste)
• Oil crayons (create a resist effect under the paste)
• Gloves if you don’t want to have the colors on your hands
• Anything else you can think of to mark and color paper
• Smooth surface like glass or Plexiglas on which to work with the paste paper.
